What is Healthy Aging?
At LULOA Yoga, healthy aging is defined as the continual process of making smart lifestyle choices to create, support, and maintain balance in four areas vital to overall well-being: physical movement, community, consumption, and rest.
Why Does it Matter?
As substantiated by evidence-based research, it is lifestyle - not genetics - which has the greatest impact on an individual’s overall health and well-being.
This is FANTASTIC knowledge because it means we are no longer tied to the antiquated belief that growing older is a downward slide or something to be looked at with dread, or worse, complacency.
Instead, we can write our own life script for aging by harnessing the power of our individual lifestyle choices to impact and change our physical, mental, and emotional well-being in real, meaningful ways.
The Relationship with Yoga
The practice of yoga is a perfect companion to healthy aging, because it directly impacts each of the four areas vital to well-being: physical movement, community, consumption, and rest.
These 4 Pillars of Healthy Aging are impacted through a consistent yoga practice, making it one of the most influential relationships an individual can have regarding their overall health and wellness.
At LULOA Yoga, my approach to teaching yoga from a functional movement perspective further supports the relationship between yoga and healthy aging by moving the physical body in ways needed for everyday life. Other elements of the practice, such as pranayama (breath work) and mindfulness, do the internal work needed to restore and maintain balance of our overall well-being.
